Arabia

The Arabian Peninsula, the largest peninsula in the world, home of the Arabs of Himyar (qq.v.) and of the prophet Muhammad (q.v.). It was the expansion of Islam (q.v.) after Muhammad's death in 632 that brought Arabia out of its isolation and into conflict with Byzantium and Persia (qq.v.). Thereafter, its political importance decreased as centers of Islamic power developed outside the peninsula.
